Guadalupe River Park San José · same watershed

What is known

SPUR/Sherwood’s Rewilding study explores a healthier urban river with public access, flood function and ecological repair. It is a feasibility/design study, not evidence that all depicted interventions were built.

Design opening

Let the watershed organize campus soil, runoff and planting. A river/trail public-space extension can be a separately agreed contribution with the City/Valley Water; the study’s river interventions are not authority to reshape land beyond the campus.

Lower Guadalupe mitigation planting Across the river near US-101

What is known

Valley Water describes roughly 2 acres of native mitigation planting on the southwest riverbank, installed about 2001–2002. Plant monitoring ended in 2015; the correspondence explicitly says wildlife monitoring was not conducted.

Design opening

Borrow the nearby native plant community—cottonwood, willows, mulefat and creeping wildrye—and its attention to survival/recruitment. Do not claim documented wildlife recovery from a planting-survival record.

River Oaks Park North San José

What is known

EPTDESIGN describes a five-acre park on former industrial land, retaining mature trees and integrating stormwater planting, paths and active/passive recreation.

Design opening

Retain mature canopy as the site’s spatial anchor. Use planted swales as visible landscape features with paths/bridges and quieter edges. Public sports/play areas are not directly transferable inside a secure campus.

Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus Mountain View

What is known

Microsoft’s Water Works account presents integrated treatment/reuse, restored creek-related habitat and a living roof at its office campus. It demonstrates a client precedent, not the water system proposed for SJC04.

Design opening

Use its native living roof as a nearby client precedent for habitat-integrated architecture. For SJC04, test a smaller planted roof or canopy against equipment, load and water constraints; borrow integration rather than copying the office-campus system.

Google Bay View Mountain View baylands

What is known

Google describes wet meadows, woodland and marsh/pond landscapes alongside its campus. Photographs and the tour show planted water margins integrated with occupied outdoor areas.

Design opening

Combine stormwater form, planting gradients and views into one landscape. Freshwater SJC04 and a baylands campus differ in salinity, water availability and scale; transfer the gradient idea, not the exact plant mix.

South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Alviso · downstream

What is known

Restored Pond A21 shows tidal marsh recovery in the Alviso complex. The A8 design memorandum documents proposed wetland-to-upland transition zones elsewhere in that complex. These are tidal/saline habitats downstream of SJC04.

Design opening

Borrow gradual wet–dry transitions and refuge above wet ground; place viewing access without fragmenting habitat. Use freshwater plant communities and campus-scale hydrology at SJC04, rather than salt-marsh plants or tidal earthwork dimensions.

Coyote Valley restoration alternatives South San José

What is known

The Open Space Authority’s 2026 alternatives compare hydrologic and habitat restoration options across a large valley-floor landscape. They include creek/floodplain change and wet meadow, marsh, riparian and oak/grassland habitat.

Design opening

Translate wet meadow, dry refuge and beaver-inspired slowing/storage into campus drainage and planting. River channels or dam analogues beyond the parcel are a separate restoration partnership requiring flood/fish design and landowner agreement.

Laguna Seca overlook Coyote Valley

What is known

The 2026 overlook concepts concentrate access and views at a wetland edge rather than dispersing people through every habitat area.

Design opening

Create a small number of useful resting/viewing points, preserving a quieter habitat zone beyond. Transfer accessible overlook logic, not the size or hydrology of Laguna Seca.

Equinix ZH5 Zurich · data-center roof comparator

What is known

The operator documents a roof covered with vegetation and organic material at ZH5. This demonstrates that a data-center building type can accommodate a planted roof; it does not establish spare capacity or suitable plants for SJC04.

Design opening

Compare roof/mechanical sections, not just appearance. Develop a climate-fit partial-roof alternative with low water demand. Start with wind/drought-tolerant native planting trials; do not transfer Zurich’s climate or claim equivalent ecological performance.

What is known

Microsoft’s Silicon Valley office campus includes a planted native roof integrated with occupied outdoor space. This is a local climate/client reference, not a data-center security or structural specification.

Design opening

Use the film to explore roof texture, seasonal character and connections to people. At SJC04, separate public ground-level benefits from employee/service roof access; a roof garden does not replace an accessible public edge.
